I think you neglected to mention the third "should," the political "should," as in, I should take this action to get votes. The political "should" trumps the moral and legal "should" every time in the mind of the rationalizing politician. He rationalizes that he "should" take a particular action to help him get elected, then he can worry about legality and morality after he's elected. But by then it's too late and the politician has compromised his principles in the name of vote-getting and never takes a heading on his moral compass again.

<It is perfectly legitimate to take into account the wishes of a substantial portion of the citizenry in eliminating offense plaques.>
Agreed. How about a referendum?

Government spaces are rife with monuments and plaques to all sorts of causes and groups. Would you feel better if they were all removed, or just the ones that offend the most vocal "substantial portion of the citizenry?" Remember what comprises some of those groups before you answer.

<It is reasonable to ban it in morning exercises>
I know some of these issues are complicated but that's a pretty liberal attitude to take. Would you at least grant us a moment of silence in the morning? Will George?
