Remote-Control Monitoring? How CIOs are keeping track of distant IT equipment by Jeff Bruening [ April 04, 2000 ] CIOs and vice presidents of departments should begin budgeting for remote device purchases, starting later this year or early next year, especially for companies with remote staffing and remote equipment requirements. "I've got the CIO of Chevron asking me why he can't access both an oil well in New Mexico and one in Nigeria, to find out their outputs," says Arlen Nipper, president of Arcom Control Systems, a consulting firm. "You'd think with satellite communications, we'd be able to put a small antenna with a computer monitoring device on an oil well or gas line and find out in real time what the output is, but not right now. But by 2001 we will, and anyone who is in charge of a department for remote staff or remote equipment better start budgeting now." Nipper -- like other IT professionals -- is beginning to use pervasive computing technology from IBM combined with satellite company Globalstar's global network. Nipper began beta-testing the technology this quarter. "I'm finding companies all over the place who want to be beta testers," he maintains. "The companies are ones who have remote equipment that need to be read either for consumption or repair and maintenance. These are the traditional utilities, oil and gas companies, railroads, and the like. "Right now, they have two guys in a truck, bouncing around the backwoods checking meters. Why can't an oil well be viewed as a thin client? It's only going to need a simplistic chip with a small up-gain antenna [to] send 512 bytes of information back to the home office,? says Nipper. ----------------------------------------------------------- Also, the military wants DATA capability for Globalstar: From CNN.com "Capt. Chris Eubank, a spokesman for the U.S. Army Space and Missle Defense Battlelab , said that the prototype program (JEDI) will transfer to Globalstar communications network when the Iridium orbiters deactivate. Yet Globalstar currently does not offer data transmission, which is vital for most JEDI tools. The satellite consortium plans to roll out that service in June. Eubanks said he expects a "seamless switch" between the two networks...." ---------------------------------------------------------- G* USED FOR TRUCK TRACKING & CELL PHONE by: ralphla54 6/8/00 9:04 am Msg: 44841 of 47590 ARINC (Aeronautical Research Incorporated) in Annapolis MD has a system to track trucks using G* phones. They have sold approximately 2,000 to the trucking industry. The systems phones home and reports GPS position. Two hijacked trucks have been returned, one was found at a chop shop and the other in the middle of the desert. The system is called "Dominium" (spelling may be wrong). It relies on the G* tri mode capability. ARINC is also doing development for the military using the G* phone. I d not have any detail about this yet. Another company affiliated G* is about to expand its service to the US from Canada. They also do truck tracking. I assume utilizes the G* systems. Will some one please verify this. newswire.ca Value is growing for Globalstar! We are just ramping up, 12 weeks does not create a new market folks. Look how long Amazon has been building from scratch. The Globalstar service is valuable and needed globally by governments, businesses and individuals. With almost 6 billion invested by GLP and the service providers this program will not stop for want of a few hundred million more to develop it. Sincerely, Investartist
