From KoreaTimes: Wireless Internet Mart to Grow 10 Times in 2 Years

2000/06/07(Wed) 17:51

Expecting the wireless Internet market to grow ten-fold in two years, mobile communications companies are competing for dominance.

The number of domestic wireless Internet users will increase from 1.9 million as of April to 10 million at the end of this year.

The Ministry of Information and Communication also predicted yesterday there would be 20 million at the end of 2001 and 25 million at the end of 2002.

Wireless Internet service is expected to spread fast if telecommunication companies like SK telecom launch MC1X service, a preliminary stage of IMT-2000 business, in the latter half of this year.

Mobile communications companies plan to invest 1.4 trillion won ($1.25 billion) in the wireless Internet sector over three years, betting the market will grow from 180 billion won this year to over 1 trillion won in 2002.

The country's No.1 mobile communications firm SK Telecom, which started supplying wireless Internet service under the name ``n.TOP'' last year, plans to start MC1X service in the latter half of this year. By beating other companies to the draw, SK intends to take the lead in the wireless Internet market as well.

Shinsegi Telecomm, which merged with SK, launched a wireless Internet service ``i.touch'' at the end of last year and has diversified usage to include ticket booking and stock trading.

It will strengthen e-commerce in the latter half by making alliances with department stores and banks.

Korea Telecom Freetel started supplying wireless Internet service in August last year, upgraded speed by introducing IS-95B service a few months later and recently launched a new brand ``na'' targeting teenagers.

Hansol M.com, formerly Hansol PCS, hopes business changes with its name. The mobile Internet company now supplies ``m.com018'' and is trying to attract young people through an advertising blitz.

And LG Telecom recently launched a new brand ``ez-i'' for both wired and wireless Internet.
