Pomp,

I am intrigued by your comment that Rambus, to paraphrase, didn't work very hard to get its patents. Or rather, didn't deserve the patents because they didn't earn them somehow.

I'm not communicating very clearly. The patents I've looked at are (as are most chip patents) bordering on trivial. I don't doubt that a lot of hard work went into DRDRAM design and architecture, but the Rambus claims affecting SDRAM and DDR have very little to do with their DRDRAM technology.

I see this move by Rambus as a ninth hour attempt to keep the company going. DRDRAM is not doing well, and management is pulling all the stops out.

They may be successful in the courts. I have been surprised by legal decisions on many occasions, but either way I intend to make lots of money trading options.

I will be absolutely shocked if any other memory manufacturers sign up like Toshiba did, without a protracted court battle. Remember that Toshiba makes the engine which drives PS2, and their fortunes are closely tied to Rambus. Toshiba is probably a one shot deal for Rambus. Round 2 will be much tougher.
