While I agree with your analysis of Clinton's, shall we say, "opportunism," if you think the "left" in this country is a bunch of communists, then you are the one still dreaming from the past. The rags I am talking about, such as the Nation, actually publish rather spirited debate about the full range of public policy options, with an emphasis on the green/labor coalition, which has nothing to do with Mao and Politburos (although our Congress now returns incumbents at a higher rate than the old Soviet politburo!), and everything to do with lunchpail and environmental issues. In fact, they deplore the same corporate criminality that is so thoroughly discussed on this thread.

Don't let your loathing of Clinton (which I share) obscure your understanding of US politics. Clinton is not a leftist with some conspiritorial socialist agenda. He is simply a tool of the same corporate interests that fund the Bush campaign. It's just that Clinton has learned that the best strategy for political success is to make promises about fairness, justice, and the environment, while serving the same masters as the Republicans. No wonder the Republicans hate him so much - he has stolen their role and is doing a better job of selling it to the American people.
