Scumbria, wrong again, I know of quite a number of patents on broad basic principles (we call these "generic patents"), I happen to have one like that, and the applications range from back lighting for LCD to optical chemical reactors and another 150 applications in between. The Gould laser patent, is a famous one, the Polaroid instant photography another one, the Halloid (later Xerox) use of selenium plate for image transfer (and thus xerography), is yet another one. One I am sure you did not even know, is Einstein's patent on an amonnia based heat engine (refrigerator), which employs the principle of using a working gas through compression (discharge heat to the environment) and adiabatic expansion (withdraw heat from a cold area). I am sure each poster here knows of at least 10 generic patents like that. Stan Ovshinski must have at least 25 generic patents like that.
