Speaking of MEMs, I found the following while digging through GLW files:

corning.com

Corning, New York, June 12, 2000 -- Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) announced today that it has completed the previously announced acquisition of IntelliSense Corporation of Wilmington, Massachusetts. Corning had previously held a 33% equity ownership position in the company.

A leading provider of micro-electro-mechnical systems (MEMS) software, design and fabrication, IntelliSense will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Corning. It is anticipated that the company will enhance Corning?s development of optical switching products and cross-connects -- elements that will play a key role in the future development of all-optical networking.

since there is a land grab going on in Canada (it went to NT), there's also a much smaller one that just occured in NC.

I think JDSU beat NT by 7 acres.<g> The Raleigh News Observer has a few more details about the Cronos plant. - peggylynn

The state does offer any company that invests in North Carolina a package that includes a 7 percent tax credit for research equipment to improve a facility, and other tax breaks for hiring and training employees.

Ted Conner, a vice president of the Durham Chamber of Commerce, was involved in the negotiations but declined to say what offers were on the table for JDS Uniphase. But he said, "We want to work with them on work-force and regulatory issues to make this a very comfortable environment for them,"

Others involved with the deal say the real significance of the property and the deal is the potential for expansion. The building sits on a 107-acre parcel of land that can accommodate almost 1 million square feet of manufacturing space.

"There is incredible potential for future expansion," Shope said.

The manufacturing facility is already equipped to provide 22,000 square feet of "clean rooms," or production areas free of dust that can contaminate the silicon wafers that Cronos makes, said Munana of Corporate Realty. The existing building can handle up to 485 employees, based on Motorola's capacity, he said.
