Just what the doctor ordered: Blutonium

The Blutonium product line is targeted at so-called personal area networks and wireless local area networks. Innovent's chips enable high-performance short-range wireless communications between devices such as personal digital assistants and cell phones to personal computers, so-called smart phones and other devices in the home and at work.

The first Blutonium chip is available now for sampling to customers, with more widespread distribution expected in the fourth quarter of this year and the first quarter of next year, Innovent Chief Executive William Colleran said in an interview from the Bluetooth 2000 convention in Monaco.

The chips are expected to come in around a price of $5 over the long term, which would make them competitive with current generation infrared wireless devices -- such as TV remotes -- that require a clear line of sight to work.

The deal should add to Broadcom's earnings, exclusive of one-time charges, within 12 months, Nicholas said. He said Broadcom would take a charge in the third quarter for the deal, which is expected to close within 60 days. He would not specify the size of the charge.
