I am sure you are correct. An industry specific problem does not take everything down with it.

One thing I feel strongly about is that paper assets will trade for "fair value" at some point in the future. Therefore, if one is purchasing stocks at the present they should do their DD to understand what they are assuming is priced into the stock. I am not willing to pay for an asset that assumes growth that will be realized 5 years from now. Heck, on the technology front, I can not predict who will be in business 5 years from now.

Gold is another issue. If you believe the US $ is going to be relatively stronger than any other currency for a long period of time or that the gold companies are going to continue to hedge their production. Gold may not be a good bet.
