Many ephedra supplements also contain a cup of coffee's worth of caffeine, another stimulant, so a few capsules a day really rev people up.

And that stuff Edwarda was taking seems to have contained rather more than a coffee cup's worth of caffeine. Guarana is apparently very powerful stuff.

If she were trying to lose weight for a special occasion, might she have taken more than the recommended dose? My guess is that if I took even one of the Xenadrine caps I'd feel as if I'd stuck my hand in a wall socket and wouldn't sleep for days.

I'm not saying this is likely to be the cause of her illness. But it might have exacerbated problems already present, or might have weakened her system sufficiently to make her a likely host(ess) for whatever it is that she has.

Many people, unfortunately, believe that because vitamins and herbs are "natural", they're harmless. I remember reading a few years ago about a woman who took megadoses of something (forget the name) that in small quantities is indeed harmless (though not particularly beneficial, either). She ended up having to have a liver transplant. Selenium's another: may be good for you if taken as suggested, but massive concentrations are deadly.
