AlibiDan - Re: "Remember how you kept telling us all that AMD was in big trouble because it faced the costs of CPU+Cache+Module in its Athlon while Intel had the on-chip cache Coppermine? And that Intel could make big profits on chips that it was selling at AMD's cost of production? Most of us AMD longs thought the the profitability of CPUs was such that on-chip or off-chip cache wasn't a make or break issue. What's your current thinking on the topic?"

It's a VERY SIGNIFICANT Issue !

Now, AMD has switched over to ThumperTurd, but has had to increase their silicon die size from 102 sq. mm. to 120 sq. mm, an increase of 18%.

Intel is now switching over to the "C0" stepping of the Coppermine, with a 5% SHRINK, bringing their die size down to 101 sq. mm.

This gives Intel a 19% die size advantage.

Couple this with Intel's lower cost FC-PGA packaging (plastic) compared to the expensive multi-layered CERAMIC packaging of the ThumperTurd, and Intel still has a huge cost advantage.

Re: "But suddenly it can't support demand because it hadn't planned for sufficient expansion. Trouble is, it's hard to look at the paragraph above and not conclude that there should have been plenty of capacity - unless something negative has been going on with yields"

Or something great has been happening with demand. But by all means continue to believe that yields have crashed and Intel is falling back on Katmai.
