The outpouring here reminds me of the piles of flowers, bears, etc. that mounded up after Diana's death. When people touch you, the need to do something to express the importance to you of the link you have with them is overwhelming.

This thread is important to us as it is to Edwarda.

I think it would be best to turn our focus to the thread header and pray for Edwarda. And do our best to send our love and concern as "disembodied" voices to a dear and gracious friend.

I think this sentiment is about right.

I've just spent the past couple of days by her bedside. I met her cousins, Eileen and Maureen who are real heros in this matter. They have been with her during so much of their free time over the past week. My contribution pales by comparison. Today, reinforcements arrived in the form of Claudia and Marcie. I had hoped to meet them but had to settle for phone call with Claudia. Neo has encapsulated the information I gleaned from the Doctors and staff. I won't repeat it again. But, I would like to stress again that the hospital staff seems to be taking excellent care of Monica and I was most impressed by the attending physician. As most of you know I am a paid skeptic and so being impressed by Doctors is not something I usually admit. I was impressed by the facility and I have checked with some Doctors I know who have assured me my impressions are correct. (I asked so many questions that one of the residents told me I ought to got to law school. I didn't tell him I already had!) At this point, I think that all that can be reasonably done without taking undue risks is being done. The Doctors have indicated that they believe there is some sort of abdominal infection but they can not be sure as yet exactly as to its nature. Monica is very weak and more aggressive treatment might do more harm than good. The treatments they have attempted have either not worked or have not greatly improved her situation. She has been tested for infectious agents and those test were negative.

Her condition is grave. She is listed as critical. That means that her condition is not stable. She has many physical challenges ahead. I am not sure how aware she was of our presence. She is heavily sedated but she did seem to respond to conversation. I leaned over the bed and told her of the outpouring of support. I told her how many friends she had. I told her to hang on and fight on as best she could. I stroked her forehead and held her hand as I talked. I know that she sometimes worried about being "alone" and I wanted her to know just how many were there and how many more wanted to be. And lastly I told her she better not plan on leaving us anytime soon as I had damn few friends to begin with and I could not afford to lose one as good as she. I just hope she could hear that. I know she'd get a chuckle out of it and knowing her she'd fight like hell to keep from disappointing me. That's just how she is.

The situation is grave but not without hope. It is my opinion that she is in God's hands. Let Him hear your voice and tell Him we are not ready yet to give her up. For those of you who don't believe, try to send her some positive energy in the form of your fond memories, love and concern for our special friend and remember, Monica does believe. We need more Monicas in this world. We can't afford one less. I know you all have been thinking of her over the past few days. In my opinion, now is the time to redouble our "spiritual" efforts.
