That's a very interesting take on the "root" vs. "route" pronunciaton.

If I understand you correctly, whether the "root" pronunciation is used, or whether "route" proununciation is used depends upon whether one is talking about "out" as in "route", or path and circuit, as in "root". Intuitively, that makes good sense to me. Therfore, a "root" canal refers to a "path" taken by the nerve branches of a tooth...which is exactly correct. Thus, a "route" canal would be incorrect because "route" refers to "removal"...which hopefully doesn't happen under normal circumstances to a tooth nerve.

Thanks for your insightful comments relative to this "profound" and "highly confusing" pronunciation dilemma.
