This is all really interesting. It will be fascinating if this all works out as we thought- and Cuba becomes our friend (or at least, not our enemy) because of the heightened awareness the Elian mess has brought to Cuban-American relations. I can't wait to see what happens.

On another topic I just saw the most disturbing movie by Mike Figgis, called The Loss of Sexual Innocence. Anyone else seen it? Gosh- I've sort of had my own Figgis festival. I just saw Miss Julie-based on Strindberg, directed by Figgis- that was DARK, but it's Strindberg, I expected dark (although I'd forgotten just HOW dark) and then I saw THIS, also dark, and well, just weird. And I still am not sure what he was trying to say. There's an obvious Adam and Eve, and I think he was trying to cover the gamut of sexual relationships- or at least that was my impression- it is a movie of impressions, dreams, bits of the past mingled with the present- and some heartbreaking moments. And I'm kind of annoyed to have sat through the heartbreaking moments without really GETTING anything out of the damn movie. It's almost as obscure as The Sheltering SKy- but not quite.

So did anyone out there see this, and get something out of it?

Dodd's right. What a sad commentary on politics that neither presidential candidate has the guts to stand up and say hey let's wake up, the cold war is over, the policy of isolation is counterproductive to democratic goals, let's get rid of it and make use of the other side of the love/fear equation in the minds of cubanos, if isolation ever made any sense it definitely does not now.

But they're gutless ... scared to bring it up ... Florida is a swing state, perceived to be controlled by a few who define themselves by their hatred.

I've been following both the leadership race in the Canadian Alliance party and the presidential election in M‚xico, and neither is going much better ... by the time anybody looked near able to win i'd lost respect for them, for one reason or another .... sad ... [even sadder - this didn't inhibit me from taking sides in both, lol]
