I don't get (from the article) that it was ever "popular" with very many people.

I was impressed by the fact that so many of those surveyed had strong negative feelings about abortion, but were still unwilling to impose those views on others. A remarkably mature view, and a recognition that neither abortion nor compelling women to bear unwanted children will ever be a truly satisfactory alternative.

It would be interesting to see if an increase in the number of those who oppose abortion would be matched by a change in the numbers of those actually seeking abortions.

I should also point out that the project mentioned in the article I cited aimed to bring access to abortion specifically to poor women in third world countries where abortion is prohibited. The issue takes on a very different complexion in such locations.
