You should never, ever tell yourself NOT to do something in golf.

It sounds like you have been reading Dr. Bob Rotella, the golf psychologist (Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect). He says that the mind recognizes all words except "not". So if you are thinking "do not hit it in the water", your mind see's "do hit it in the water". As you said, he says you should have only a picture of the precise target in your mind.

Good book(s), worth a few strokes (IMHO).

I see John already made the Rotella reference. I agree, and I try to pick a spot (and I mean a little spot) that I want to hit the ball to. Sometimes water gets in the way, lol.
