NBC, Disney express concerns over US DTV standard

6/21/2000 Korean-based LG Electronics has signed an agreement to work with VisionTech Ltd (Herzliya, Israel) to develop personal video recording (PVR) technology for LG?s future digital products.
A PVR-based TV set featuring LG?s HD-1 single chip MPEG-2 decoder and VisionTech?s Kfir single chip MPEG-2 encoder will be in production by Q1 2001. LG is expected to market the product under its Zenith subsidiary name.

PVR technology has blossomed in the past year since new products were introduced by TiVo and ReplayTV on the US market. Major consumer electronics manufacturers such as Sony, Philips and Panasonic have introduced the new devices, which use hard drives to allow viewers to pause, fast forward and rewind while recording video in real-time. Satellite providers DirecTV and EchoStar also have or plan to have the technology integrated into their decoders.
