Re: DSL Service

I finally am up and running with this Etrade free DSL.

Here was the process if anyone is interested:
-First a Bell Atlantic tech installed a line (separate from any of my telephone lines) from the telephone pole to my house.
-Then a Covad tech installed the modem. He advised me that I didn't have a network card on my computer and I needed to get one because Covad doesn't provide that service. I called Etrade and questioned this and the rep told me that if I didn't have the card that I was responsible to purchase and install one. This is exactly what I did, but I went back to Etrade's FAQ (since I was so sure that I read everything was free) and right there in the "what equipment do I need" question was this >>>SBC or its affiliates will deliver all other necessary equipment free of charge, including a DSL modem, a Network Interface Card (NIC), a splitter, and inside wiring. <<< I just called Etrade regarding this and the rep said that ETrade will credit my account for the network card.
-After the wire, modem, and NIC card were all installed, I had to configure my network settings in Windows.

As of now, DSL is running, but nobody (Etrade, SBC, etc) knows who I am supposed to call for any technical assistance. I'm assuming it's Concentric since they are who I had to insert in the "host" field. At this point, I have not been provided with any email address. I need to find out how to set up my Outlook Express settings and no one knows who I am supposed to call. I have tried unsuccessfully to contact Concentric.

If anyone out there has completed this installation and can give further information I would appreciate it. I think the problem with this whole process is that too many companies (Etrade, SBC, Bell Atlantic, Covad, Concentric) are involved. Since Etrade is the company that is providing this service to me free of charge, I think they should know who I need to call but typically they don't have a clue!

Well, I can't really complain considering my connection is running (I have heard nightmares about this). I just need information and nobody can give it to me.

Good luck to anyone else going through the process!
