I believe it would have been expensive and _greatly_ performance enhancing.

I'm assuming you've never looked at the specs of an Alpha MB. They are incredible. Things like 128/256 bit wide interfaces to main memory. You want the 256 bit interface? Just plug enough memory modules in. They made lots of design choices like that. High performance that caused high cost. I never saw an Alpha MB for less than $800, but every one was really really cool.
