Dave:
I don't want to get in into the performance benefits of or lack of current RDRAM technology since there is little difference between 815e and 820e/840 overall performance and Intel doesn't tout RDRAM as fastest platform to any great degree as confirmed by many third party benchmarks. If you still doubt this fact, I will use Intel's benchmarks.

"PC memory Architecture" pdf file , slide 22

They state that the mean benefit of 820/RDRAM over BX/SDRAM platform is 10% up to 1500 MHz projected clockspeed. The 815e chipset with PC133 closes most of that 10% difference quite cost effectively vs 820e chipset wiht PC800 RDRAM.

I would like to more importantly focus on QRSL announced Friday afternoon by RMBS. The first point I picked up on quickly is the fact that RMBS only announced it for small memory solutions like game machines or set top boxes and not for uses like hiend computer systems from Intel. I think that RMBS is leaving QRSL for computer system memory announcements until Intel is ready to announce QRSL or Intel microprocessors at a later date which is a given fact that it will happen within next 2-3 years.
However, since Toshiba is a key supplier to Sony, who will probably impliment QRSL as one of the early adoptors for game machines or set top boxes applications, Toshiba will have to be on the best standing with RMBS NOW in order to qualify for access to QRSL.
If access to RMBS's QRSL license means paying SDRAM /DDR royalties to RMBS to get in on next generation RMBS IP, I think Toshiba made the right decision.
However, IMO the rest of the industry will take a pass on QRSL and will continue to make the half hearted minimal efforts to support current generation of RDRAM al la Micron, Hyundai and Hitachi until customers ask for it in lieu of SDRAM now or QRSL over DDR in the future.
