Language trivia-

It's actually bellwether---
A wether is a castrated ram. A bell used to be tied around the neck of a male sheep and he (I guess "it" is more appropriate if the animal had been castrated, though I don't believe that was a requirement) anyway- it served as the leader of the flock.
