Nice find, Jock...very interesting. Never mind displacing entrenched chip suppliers--simply partner with a deep pocketed "newbie" with whom you have a successful past. Let's see if it plays out.

Jock,

The potential is there... would be much more likely if not for:

1) QCOM and Sony also have a large amount of joint working experience, including a 50/50 joint CDMA handset development in the US in the late 90's under the QPE guise.

2) As far as I can tell, LSI still doesn't have an updated license for 1X or HDR, which will soon be mandated by most CDMA operators. This of course can be changed with a press release, but getting the chips into handsets based on the new generational tech. is something else.

Only time will tell...

Jock,

I think you have hit the nail on the head with the LSI/Sony handset speculation. Relationships run deep with Japanese industrialists and LSI has successfully nurtured a close working relationship with Sony over a long period of time. I'm not sure of the Qcom/Sony relationship but the product was not a success. That does not make for good relations. So it is quite possible that Sony will switch over to LSI unless there are prohibitive costs to LSI for fully licensing CDMA from Qcom if that is indeed a problem. I suspect that it is not a problem or Daane would not be spouting off about timetables etc.

I donït know about LSI, but I think Sony is a hell of a play for today for the next 4 years - i really lke their whole internet appliance strategy and I donït thnk they have any equals today. If they excute, I think you can get a 10 bagger over the next few years easy! If they canït excute the whole thing, the other parts will still bring you back the bacon you put in initially.

Today, there was a rumor about NOK buying out QCOM because of QCOM's CDMA technology. At this moment, QCOM has a market cap of $51B! That would make it less likely but still possible.

As I understand it, LSI does have CDMA technology as well. With a disastrous sell-off today, the market cap is $20B. Also, QCOM does depend tremendously on CDMA to grow its revenue and earning; LSI does not. In fact, CDMA is extra for LSI in the future. QCOM has a sales of $3.9B; LSI has $2.2B. LSI looks cheap compared to QCOM. In fact, LSI is trading at a great discount compared to all other semiconductor companies with any specialties.

Now, let's put two and two together before the Wall Street does. Isn't LSI a better buy-out candidate for NOK than QCOM? I suspect they know that too, and these guys will try to drive the price down in the next few days. So, they can load up at a lower price.

Any one has other opinions?

Thread:

I have two indicators on whether the semi cycle has peaked.

1) AMAT reports record revenue / earnings and the stock doesn't set a new high.

2) Corrigan sells some of his LSI stake.

Now LSI has the storage business but I saw a comment that there have been LSI insider selling over the past few months. Does anyone know if WIll sold some shares.

Thanks in advance.
