John, here is some info about iPAQ, Strong ARM and CF modularity.

I like the transition to juiced-up RISC processors, "flashable ROM" (as Psion uses) for the OS which is upgradable, and expansion modules that allow purchasers to design their own custom handheld based on preference.

[The concept of flashable ROM was also mentioned in a recent Transmeta article. Apparently the instruction sets that are translated by the processor needs to be stored somewhere for subsequent access rather than retranslated with each use.]

BTW, your crystal ball is probably telling the truth. The PC remains the mother ship while the various handheld computing devices, of which I consider digital cameras and MP3 players to be a part, are like encapsulated, life-sustaining modules that carry you through on your various journeys and explorations.
