And in San Diego, home of Telecom Valley, of all places!
I can tell you that CDMA is the only reliable service in North San Diego County.

>>read it and weep<<

I read it and don't see anything about GTE in the San Francisco area. Anyone know whether it will be subsumed in this deal? I'd hate to lose my new CDMA cell phone :(

Fraaaaaaaaaaaaank!! <whine!>

Yeah, well, read it and weep. AT&T to rip out CDMA and install TDMA in the San Diego and Houston phone co's is is buying.

I've never been one of the people that thought AT&T would switch over to CDMA....

Verizon had to sell these properties (for the merger to go through), there wasnt really any other CDMA operators who needed these cities (with the possible exception of Alltel, who probably didnt have the money). AT&T will stay with TDMA until they start LOSING subs.....

It seems as though the article says that the systems that AT&T is buying represent 'overlapping holdings' of the three sellers, who should therefore, as Verizon Wireless, have the ability to continue to offer service in the areas. Am I reading this wrong?

Under the three purchase deals, AT&T will buy the systems from Vodafone AirTouch, GTE Corp. and PrimeCo PCS, a Bell Atlantic Corp. venture. Those companies--all AT&T rivals--have merged their mobile phone businesses under the name Verizon Wireless, and were required by regulators to shed overlapping holdings in several markets.

Here's a little CDMA to TDMA story I thought you might like.

Recently, a similar switch was made in the Milwaukee area. My brother was forced into switching from CDMA to TDMA. I told him, at the time, that he would probably find himself switching back to CDMA in a couple of years.

He is moving to a new house. It is located about 1 mile away (less, actually) from the old one. There was a mix-up in the request to install a phone line to the new house. It won't be able to be hooked up until around 2 weeks after he moves in.

So, I said, well at least you have cell service.
The answer back was - the reception isn't any good at the new house.
