But seriously, any moron who understand the derivations of English idiomatic phrases would understand that pillories, or their foot-locking counterparts, stocks, were the origin of that particular phrase. People were locked into these contraptions in public areas and passers by would ridicule and laugh at their embarrassing punishment.

Given the current disregard for the law, it kinda brings a yearning of nostaligia to my heart.

And then there is 'ol Judge Roy Bean....
