If you are worshipping the Characteristics of God as a kind, benevolent, compassionate, and merciful being then that cannot "turn out" to be evil. If you were to be greeted by some powerful creature in an afterlife it would be something else than the God you were worshipping during life. Your God can only "turn out" to be evil if you are worshipping evil in the first place.
