Vishay makes a major acquisition every couple of years to expand in size and add product lines. In 1998, it acquired the Semiconductor Business Group of TEMIC, which included Telefunken and 80.4% of Siliconix. Semiconductors represented 43% of sales in 1999, while 32% came from capacitors and 25% from resistors. The active components brought into the product mix with this acquisition are in some respects complementary goods with the company's traditional passive component products, and this has contributed to more effective sales efforts. "Having the semiconductors helps to sell the passives" and vice versa, management relates. Passives represent about 60% of revenue now, but the growth rate (and margins) for actives (i.e. the semiconductors made by SILI) are higher, and actives might become 50% of revenue in 2001.
