Sam, the problem with our prior microdrive discussions here on the SNDK thread is that we were way ahead of the curve...

...and most of our discussion is now beyond the search engine that SI offers.

Anyone who uses a digital camera knows why a 1.0 gigabyte microdrive is unnecessary. Eli has addressed the appropriate marketplace for this device in a dedicated press release from December of 1998. Also, the CFA accomodated IBM's request to modify the CF slot. It was a calculated decision based on the balance of the attributes and pitfalls of the device. Had it been a real threat to CF they would have forced IBM to promote a proprietary socket. The heated discussions and discourse we had regarding the microdrive many, many months ago have been nothing less than dead-on.

Having said that...

If and when consumers begin forgoing individual purchases of camcorders and digital cameras in favor of a single, hybrid device the need for higher capacity storage will be salient. Recall that there are other rotating drive options out there other than microdrive. Also, in several years time flash memory will be available on a much higher order. There is just too much speculation involved right now. It's a moving target.
