Paul & Rudedog,
As for Alpha's days being numbered
Does anybody write software for this Arch.?
Given the design cost and volume shipped for Alpha cpu's it doesn't make financial sense to invest in new generations of alpha designs. Unless EV7 & EV8 are incremental changes to the existing deigns. In which case they don't give you the quantum jump in performance between generations.

My guess will be cpq will hold on and push the alpha design for a few more years to prove to their stock holders that they made a good decision in paying all that money for the DEC purchase (alpha rights).

What would happen to all those existing DEC 64 bit unix applications? Will they be ported or rewritten? Some of the Wall Street accounts (Tandem's client base). With the trend of developing application software, moving to outsourcing rather than in house development, how much expertise will be left in 2 or 3 years time frame for alpha based application development?
