Sun Microsystems Outshines the Competition in Gomez Survey of Brokerage Services Institutions
PR Newswire - June 20, 2000 09:15

Survey Indicates Sun Is Front-Runner Among Online and Traditional Wall Street Firms and Nabs Lead in Support for Straight Through Processing, Decimalization And
the ASP Market

NEW YORK, June 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Demonstrating the depth and breadth of its presence on Wall Street, Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced
that it is the dominant technology platform in the converging online and full-service brokerage marketplace, according to a Gomez Advisors' (www.gomezadvisors.com)
survey. Released today, the survey polled and evaluated findings from two-thirds of the financial institutions ranked on Gomez Advisors' Summer 2000 Internet
Full-Service Broker Scorecard and nearly half of the top 20 companies ranked on its Spring 2000 Internet Broker Scorecard.

Among this elite group of companies, Sun's server hardware accounted for 80 percent of Web servers and 67 percent of application servers utilized by the group. The
nearest Web server competitor, IBM, eked out 20 percent of the position; and in application servers, Sun led 4:1 over both IBM and Compaq. In back-office hardware, Sun
tied incumbent IBM, marking the first unseating of IBM's stronghold position in this category.

Sun's Solaris(TM) Operating Environment led 2:1 over its nearest competitor, Windows NT/Windows 2000, in overall operating system technology. For Web server
operating systems, 80 percent use Sun, with the majority using Sun exclusively. Impressively, five out of six companies utilize Sun's Solaris Environment in the back
office.

"The world's premier financial institutions, whether online or offline, require flexibility, capacity and availability to deliver services anytime, anywhere on any device," said
Steve Katzman, global industry manager of Securities and Capital Markets for Sun Microsystems. "A long-time commitment to this network-centric strategy has made
Sun the clear choice on Wall Street for infrastructure and integrated services ranging from the back-end, to the trading floor and down to the PDA."

While many companies participating in the survey found it difficult to indicate a technology leader from outside the brokerage industry for issues such as straight through
processing (STP) and decimalization, when they did, it tended to be Sun. For instance, Sun is viewed as the leading provider to handle the multidimensional merging of
standards throughout any system's front-end by a margin of 3:1. For decimalization, which requires the ability to handle significant increases in volume capacity, all
respondents cited Sun as the industry leader. And, in the ever-growing application service provider (ASP) market, Sun rose above the competition by a margin of 6:1.

"Connectivity among different applications is a requisite for any STP solution. The brokerage services marketplace turns to Sun to deliver this connectivity for STP
solutions and for similar computing needs that extend outside the financial institution, such as the needs of ASP market," continued Katzman. "As the industry prepares
for decimalization, the most immediate change on the horizon, Sun again is a clear choice for superior performance."
