Well, shoot. I wouldn't have pegged you as a Southern Belle either. Randy Newman was actually fairly obsessive about southern ways in the early days, there's a whole album, "Good Old Boys", sort of inspired by Huey Long, I think. See randynewman.com . On the New Orleans front, there's also "Land of Dreams", randynewman.com, which starts out pretty autobiographical and geographical. On the race front, the title track on "Sail Away", from which "God's Song" came, was about slavers.

That all done in a deadpan quasi-inspirational style showing the influence of Randy's uncle Alfred. I got that one buried in the basement on vinyl, I think I'm going to have to go get the CD.
