Philips chip unit sees Q2 sales up 50 pct

AMSTERDAM, June 21 (Reuters) - Philips Electronics NV said on Wednesday its Philips Semiconductors unit expects second quarter sales to surge more than 50 percent over the same period last year.

Revenues would beat by 10 percent the 1.435 billion euros ($1.38 billion) posted in the first quarter this year.

Philips said in a statement it told analysts in Amsterdam that sales were at an all-time high and order books had trebled in size compared to a year ago.

Despite expansion, capacity will be constrained throughout this year, in line with the sector.

Philips said earlier on Wednesday it had bought IBM's (NYSE:IBM - news) MiCRUS semiconductor fabrication facility, which produces 250,000 eight inch wafers per year.

Philips plans to invest about $100 million over the next few years in the plant, which was originally a joint venture between IBM and Cirrus Logic (NasdaqNM:CRUS - news).

Philips said its chips unit planned to invest two billion euros this year, up from 650 million in 1999.

``The semiconductor equipment market supports our ambition to achieve a sales run rate of 10 billion euros by the end of 2002,'' Arthur van der Poel, chief executive of the division, said in the statement.

Philips said its takeover last year of U.S. firm VLSI had turned out to be very good timing, since the company offers ASIC development tools and methodologies, plus high-growth opportunities in communications and networking.

Last month, Philips Chief Finance Officer Jan Hommen told reporters at a technology conference in Barcelona that the semiconductor market should grow 25-30 percent per year for the next two years, but demand would outstrip supply.

Philips shares were down 0.9 percent at 54.50 euros in mid-morning trade in a virtually flat market.
