RCN Wins First Regulatory Approvals in Two Southern California Cities To Construct Its Unique Broadband Fiber Network
================================================================
- Approvals Are First Steps to Enable RCN to
Offer Its Services to Residents of Beverly Hills and Gardena -

PRINCETON, N.J., June 27 /PRNewswire/ -- RCN Corporation (NASDAQ:RCNC), a
leading residential provider of bundled telephone, cable television and
high-speed Internet services, has received regulatory approval to construct
its high-capacity broadband network in Beverly Hills and Gardena, California.
Once completed, the RCN network will deliver bundled phone, cable and
high-speed Internet access services to the residents of these two communities.
"With this first round of approvals, the stage has been set for one of the
wealthiest and most technology-minded markets in the country to have a new
choice in communications service providers in the near future," said Michael
Adams, RCN's President and Chief Operating Officer. "Having secured regulatory
authority covering well over 35,000 homes in Beverly Hills and Gardena, we are
looking forward to rapidly building our state-of-the-art network and bringing
the best value and quality choice to area residents."
RCN's business plan focuses on targeting the most densely populated
residential areas in the country to deliver bundled communications services.
In California, the San Francisco to San Diego corridor represents two percent
of U.S. geography but accounts for 12 percent of the nation's telecom usage.
Beverly Hills and Gardena average 175 homes per mile, exceeding the national
average of 30 homes per mile.
RCN is currently offering its bundled phone, cable and high-speed Internet
access services to the northern California communities of South San Francisco,
San Mateo, and Daly City. The company also has approvals to construct its
network in Redwood City and San Francisco, and is constructing its
Megaband(TM) Network in Los Angeles in an alliance with Southern California
Edison. To date, RCN has designed or built over 4,200 fiber miles of its
high-capacity network in California.

About The RCN Network
RCN's Megaband(TM) Network is a unique broadband fiber-optic platform
capable of offering a full suite of communications services -- including fully
featured voice, video and high-speed Internet -- to residential customers. The
network employs SONET ring backbone architecture, and localized nodes built to
ensure RCN's state-of-the-art fiber optics travel to within 900 feet of RCN
customers, with fewer electronics and lower maintenance costs than existing
local networks. RCN's high-capacity fiber rich networks target 44% of the U.S.
residential communications market in over just 6% of the country's geography.
