If there was a dual 1GHz workstation, or even a quad, I would go for it...

Good point. But are you the typical family PC buyer? My guess is the average retail PC costs about $1K, +/- $200.

It will be interesting to watch retail PC sales after the Christmas sales season. If digital photography takes that much processing power, and there are a lot of digital cameras going though the turnstyle at Christmas, folks may decide their PC's are inadequate, as you did.
