BASKING RIDGE, N.J. (Dow Jones)--Lucent Technologies Inc.'s (LU) Enterprise Networks Group unit filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission for its previously announced spinoff.

In a press release Tuesday, Lucent said it expects to complete the spinoff by the close of its fourth quarter ended Sept. 30.

Enterprise Networks Group, which filed the registration under the name Lucent EN Corp., sells communications systems and software.

Lucent announced in March it would spin off the slow-growing unit, which recorded about $8 billion in revenue last year.

Lucent had sales of $38.3 billion in the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 1999.

One final note about Carly Fiorina.

She seems to be a good leader who is able to keep the ship going in the right direction. Good leaders have that indefinable spark that makes people under them want to do things better and wrap their own arms around a strategy as if their own. Maybe this is what LU is missing. The jury is out.
