what do you calculate as the current total energy consumption? Or what is the the total energy production level from oil. If you could provide a similar back of the napkin calculation that would be very much appreciated. TIA

Zeev, I get something different from your math.

The Average Earth radius is 3963 miles which is 6,376,467 meters. Thus the surface area of the Earth is (4)(pi)(r2) whic is (4)(3.14)(6,376,467)(6,376,467) = 511 TERA square meters.

At 1kW/sq Meter, that's 511 Tera kW. Then take your 1/4 of that and multiply by 10% and you get 12.8 Tera kW which is 12,800,000 MW. That's quite a lot, is it not.

I was thinking (driving home last night). Why can we invent something that converts heat back into electricity. The device could charge a battery as it transfers the heat into electricity. The device would get cold as it charges the battery. We could then blow hot room air across the device and use it as an air conditioner!. I know I must be breaking some thermodynamics law here.

But something that may be feasible would be to "even" out the temperature differential across the Earth with a network of pipes, pumps, and liquid. The Southern hemispere could send cold liquid to the North in the summer for cooling. We could then send our hot liquid back to them for their heat. The process reverses in the winter. That's would eleminate a lot of heating/cooling costs.

Zeev, I agree with you but my suggestion was as a complementary source and not as the only source.

Also I forgot to mention the issue of tide energy and sea waves, real complimentary energy source which was abandoned in the mid 80thies.

If we add also the new nuclear power conversion it may add to less oil consumption.

It is understandable that we could not capture all of teh sun energy but if we will get to 10% that would be an great achievment.
