I disagree. The "conveniences" I mentioned and many less sophisticated ones can be traced to Europe or the U.S. Christianity has been dominant in these areas and has ebbed only since the end of WWII when immigration patterns began to change and civil rights took center stage.

If we focus on the the modern age, nations that forged ahead shared strong national (organized) characteristics and values. Germany, England, Japan and even the U.S. None but the U.S. were diverse (and that was strongly Euro-centric).

These nations, while having had a definite spiritual outlooks were hardly theocracies.

This, I admit, is not quite as neat as I have drawn the picture but I believe it fundamentally (not a religious ref.) accurate.
