Greg, was in southwestern France climbing in the Pyrenees for a week in '96 (buds an' I do it every few years); exited near Lourdes amidst the Tour: excitement everywhere, a real kick. Even I'm biking this summer. Beware the traffic back-ups on the roads along which/abutting the course. Have your bikes/get there early/stay in the Inns near the course.
