For those folks that don't live in the LA area: The "rioting" was not started by Laker fans but by a local gang called the 18th Street gang which is very well known in this city.

The local media here exacerbated the situation by showing close-ups of small bonfires and focusing on the clusters of teenagers dancing around the fire. The helicopter crews were reporting breathlessly how horrible it was down there - when in fact it was limited to a couple of blocks. This brought out more of them - to join their bros. They then started setting police cars on fire and looting local businesses - again this was a small group of gang kids that did all the damage. The police were ordered to stand back and let them run amok so as to not offend these hoodlums and cause them to escalate the situation.

The rank and file cops are speaking out on the call-in radio shows expressing their frustration at not being allowed to stop the rioting which they felt they could. There was enough of them and they were fully equipped. The chief of police said that they were trying to prevent injuries and that they succeeded in that.

Once again, the media has blown this way out of proportion and was probably the reason it happened in the first place. These kids love the publicity they get.
