The thing I find most striking about this In-Flight Network announcement is that we have two HEAVYWEIGHT companies, News Corp. and Rockwell Collins, putting their commercial aviation venture in the hands of G*. That, to me, says more than anything I've heard from Globalstar.

I assume (others help me out) that one or several circuits would be held open for uplink purposes during an entire flight, and that these uplinks would be shared among the inflight data users. Thus several hundred minutes of connect time would be generated on a typical cross country flight, probably involving some pairing or combining of "voice" circuits to enhance the bandwidth. If one assumes that 2000 daily flights might offer this service (near term) then one could easily get to 1-2 M "voice" minutes of use per day. (I.E. minutes at 9.6 Mb equivalent voice bandwidth). At the customary wholesale rate of about $0.40 per minute, this would go a long way towards assuaging those quarterly burn rate blues!

autos have not been ignored by qcom; any car communication system ought to use G* also; indeed, it seems to me that G* is more the backbone.
