Gary: Why not also consider spinning off 49% of Bell Labs or more. The French did exactly that and their Industry has not suffered.

The reason I am suggesting it is because of the recent I.P valuations in the market. It appears that a Telecom research facility should in the mean have an I.P valuation of $10m per Scientist/Research Associate. Some may find that expectation high . Nevertheless the Market is now insisting on valuation of I.P and rightly so. Based on whatever figure one finds acceptable, it means in plain and simple terms "accountability".

During the past 3 years large holes have been discovered in the R&D forecasts of earlier years. This has resulted in LU filling the gaps by purchase of very expensive R&D from the Outside. In very recent times , there was Chromatis and another for Optical Filters.

It is evident that the next generation Optics will involve pattern recognition analog switches,Teleporting, Soliton non linear transmission, 3D optical recording , SANS/NAS ,XDM, Communication Net Mgmt Software etc. If the Labs were on their own they would have a much better chance to focus on Applied Research that will prove their I.P.

I hope Investors will be more demanding of the LABS.
