DALLAS (CBS.MW) -- Texas Instruments said after the close of trading
Wednesday that it will acquire Burr-Brown Corp. in a stock-for-stock
transaction valued at about $7.6 billion.

Texas Instruments (TXN: news, msgs) said the
acquisition strengthens its position in the data
converter and amplifier segments of the analog
semiconductor market. Burr-Brown (BBRC:
news, msgs) designs data converters.

?This combination means that TI will have a
leading position in essentially every high-performance analog category and
the ability to offer almost any analog component that touches a DSP,"
Texas Instruments Chief Executive Tom Engibous said in a statement.

The acquisition, which Texas Instruments expects to complete by the end of the
third quarter, will boost the company's share of the market for analog
semiconductors, chips that provide functions in cell phones such as carrying the
signal from the antennae to the processor.
