Here is a late weekend report on disk drive pricing from a sample of retail distributor drives. The drives include 487 samples from 6 different distributors. The average sample of desktop disk drive prices dropped sharply last week. Weekly average price change: Weighted desktop --- down 2.1% Less than 11gb --- down 1.5% 11gb to 21gb --- down 2.0% Greater than 21gb --- down 2.7% Enterprise --- up 2.3% Monthly average price change: Weighted desktop --- down 5.2% Less than 11gb --- down 6.1% 11gb to 21gb --- down 3.3% Greater than 21gb --- down 5.4% Enterprise --- down 2.3% Quarterly price change (monthly rate): Weighted desktop --- down 3.1% Less than 11gb --- down 3.8% 11gb to 21gb --- down 2.7% Greater than 21gb --- down 3.0% Enterprise --- down 2.0% Last Quarterly price change (monthly rate): Weighted desktop --- down 1.5% Less than 11gb --- down 1.1% 11gb to 21gb --- down 1.3% Greater than 21gb --- down 2.2% Enterprise --- up 0.1% This weekly change actually includes a week and a half, however, the reduction in prices is still quite severe. Another characteristic of the period was a large change in drives being offered. Higher areal density of 15 gb per platter are becoming common.
