Heinz, the surplus this fiscal year, outside of the Social Security trust fund, will be around $60 billion based on the latest figures. This is twice as much as the scheduled Treasury buybacks.

By the way, I think this increasing federal surplus serves as a nice counterbalance to the low savings rate and increasing debt in the private sector. I hope it can last for a year or two before the politicians get their hands on it.
