Peter, it's good to hear from someone who has actually used the equipment. Even if it is more bulky (mainly due to the size of the battery), it provides reliable service -- just the sort of thing that could eventually replace ordinary police radio systems, particularly in rural areas where it is difficult to get conventional radio coverage from ground based systems. It might be of interest to note that a company called Astropower (APWR) is making a very efficient solar battery charger suitable for cell phones. Astropower has patented technology that permits the fabrication of crystaline silicon in large sheets -- far more efficient and lower cost than the smaller size units cut from wafers.

Combining technologies such as these may reduce the size of the battery by providing more convenient ways to recharge it.

I remember the late 80's saying the same thing about the Motorola brick phone I paid $2500 for. Does anyone have a timeframe for 2nd generation handsets.

OT: Looking for anecdotal information re: performance of latest generation QCOM/G* phone. Saw one at VLNC SM in February this year. Battery has somewhat unusual form factor. If anyone is using this phone please share experiences (and battery serial number if possible). TIA. (Disclaimer: Long GSTRF and VLNC)
