This seems to be aimed squarely at Lonworks territory and appears to be the first attempt to provide a competing system based on open distributed control networks. It seems to be limited to powerline networking, whereas Lonworks can be implemented over a wide range of media. What is curious is that Echelon sits on the Steering Committee of UPnP...by supporting Cebus as well Softie seems to be covering all the bases and how this plays out will be interesting. The fact that you found this on the Sun board reveals that underneath all of this is the battle between Msft's UpnP and Sun's OSGI to provide the std platform for residential gateways...this is the real war.

CeBus is a paper std which historically has not thrived because it does not offer a comprehensive system. It is my understanding that all CeBus devices are not neccessarily interoperable and by joining "plug 'n play" this seems like an attempt by Cebus to acheive interoperability. This would be step one...step two would be to create a unified network operating system management tool that ties together all cebus devices....this would take some time to develop. Then there's the rest of the hardware/ software that is required to provide an end to end system (routers etc). The PR states that the Simple Control Protocol chipset will only be available next year sometime...at this stage it's PR, a concept, an initiative, an idea....well, show me the money.... Lonworks is a proven end to end system, currently shipping and installed in millions of devices worldwide.

Interesting development and one well worth watching for those interested in elon. Time will tell how much of a threat this will be...for now I'm not particularly worried...I guess the home market has arrived. JMHO ...anyone else?

For those that missed it here is the full release from msft:

Simple Control Protocol Vision: microsoft.com

PS: one of the companies mentioned - Itran Communications, an Israeli R&D Co. in which msft has an equity stake, has a fantastic web site which demonstrates their vision for Powerline Networking in graphic detail. Check it out: itrancomm.com
...they are also working on high speed tranceivers for data/entertainment, an area that Elon does not focus on.
