Tim, see my later post. The IRS is all over it. "Offsetting Positions" (a bull call spread meets this criterion in spades) regulations defer the loss from selling the short portion into the year that you sell the long portion. Drat. Interestingly, these rules went through in the mid 80's... I expect someone was having quite a party before the IRS figured out what was happening.
