I remember reading sometime last year that Compaq uses the FIC motherboard but had IEEE 1394 capability added onto the motherboard because chipsets didn't directly support it at the time. It is probably the same way now since Compaq still uses FIC's motherboards (according to all the review sites), and VIA's south bridge hasn't been updated.
