Tony, Well.. if you read this page , he believes Merced/Itanium is hyped up... not reasonable to conclude he isn't fond of it. But yes, your point is noted.realworldtech.com If the Itanium is $4000 for 800 MHz and 4 MB Cache and performs equivalent to $1200 dollars worth of IA32 parts, you have a solution begging for a problem (i.e. Itanium 4 processor can handle 16 Gigs of memory, large memories and we know that all major DB vendors of 32-bit "hacks" to hide the memory limitations, etc.) "I'm sure Intel marketing will figure out how to price it. I think most everyone knows that Itanium is the ice breaker, and platform establisher, whereas McKinley should be the performance competitor with Alpha, etc." --- But perhaps a more careful reading of what I wrote included Intel competitors. But let's have a bit of fun. Suppose IA32 solution costs $1200 a pop and delivers +- 10% IA64 (Itanium) tpmC numbers in a 4 processor config. IA64 is an interesting box at that point , but why bother if the CPU costs are $4000 a pop resulting in system costs that are $10000 greater? Possibility. We see how it plays out year end. But for a long time I have thought there is a good possibility of an Itanium shutout. Strong possibility Win64 really won't be ready (regardless of recent SAS article) any time soon means someone gets to do a DB on Linux (Monterey?) and IA64 at year end and be the first kid on the block. Granted, brand new architecture. Let's see how things progress. Let's see some real benchmarks and system costs, etc. A lot still to be seen. But someday Intel has to come out with something for everyone to see. Think they'll hit 800 MHz at FRS? ;-) Rob
