DENVER, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Stansbury Holdings Corporation
(OTC Bulletin Board: STBY) announced today that it has agreed to continue
funding for student research projects related to vermiculite utilization at
Montana Tech of the University of Montana, in Butte, Montana.
In May and June of this year Stansbury funded, through the Montana Tech
Foundation, a research project which, among other goals, completed a series of
laboratory test on the use of Grade E vermiculite (less than .2 mm mesh) as an
adsorption medium for metals present in Acid Rock Drainage.
Acid Rock Drainage ("ACR") is a primary source of toxic pollution to
surface drainages, as groundwater percolates out of abandoned mine workings,
and drains into streams, creeks and rivers. The high pH factor, plus toxic
minerals, threaten wildlife, flora and fisheries.
The most favorable results in laboratory studies occurred at solution
temperatures of 53 degrees C (127.4 degrees F), where the vermiculite proved
effective in removing 42% to 88% of the iron, 60% to 72% of the manganese, and
40% to 92% of the aluminum, present in an Acid Rock Drainage solution which
mimicked the solutions of the Berkeley Pit Lake in Butte.
The preliminary indications are that the higher the concentration of
metal, the lower the percentage of adsorption, but that through repeated
treatment, the concentrations drop dramatically as the adsorption rate rises.
Further studies were recommended to determine if the metals could be
easily recovered from the vermiculite once it was removed from the solution.
If so, the economic value of the recovered metals, plus the ability to recycle
the stripped vermiculite, could turn a severe environmental problem into a
profit center as well as a successful reclamation project. Present methods of
contaminant removal "from process streams are inefficient, leaving the
lingering concern of surface water contamination," according to the report.
Stansbury has agreed to fund the next phase of studies for the fall
semester at Montana Tech.
